So when I retired the 1st thing I did was sign up for Intro to Djing class at the BJIOS. A- I haven't touched vinyl Turntables in years, B- be around other music/dj enthusiasts, and C- the opportunity to learn from my Turntablist heroes, is a WIN, WIN, WIN, situation in my books. I had a great time going through the basics of djing, but ultimately it's just about respecting the craft and paying homage to an element of hip-hop. The journey continues...

This place will no doubt go down in history as the Shaolin Temple of DJ'ing. Those who reside in southern California really don't have a clue how fortunate they are to have an establishment like this in their neighborhood, because this place has become a Mecca of sorts for DJs all over the world who can only dream of having access to such a prestigious institution as this one. Consider this the DJ equivalent of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where members of the X-Men are the actual instructors. Hand to hand combat taught by Wolverine? Telepathy and telekinesis with Jean Grey? Well here you have legends like DJ Melo-D, Babu, Rhettmatic, Mr Choc, J-Rocc, and D-Styles all in rotation as your instructors. But the best part about this school is that you don't have to be a student to be a part of the community. They have monthly memberships to participate in their "open turntable" skratch sessions 2-3 times a week, where you can just jam out and cut it up with other local fellow skratch nerds. I've rekindled this long lost passion of mine that is now stronger then ever, and have made some lifelong friends in the process. I'm truly grateful to have found this home away from home with a tight knit community I can comfortably call my tribe.

Haven't been there yet but hope to pop in, in January while visiting LA. I gave five stars because of their principles and morals and the fantastic work they do in the community and teaching the art of turntablism to the young generation. I have only just started to scratch and would love to have a place like this near me. Well done The Beat Junkies 👍✌️👊

Hang on this is going to get lengthy...
I recently was referred by friend Milo to Beat Junkie IOS. I had seen and heard of the institute through social media but I thought it could be just a cash grab for people who want to be DJs. I have some bad experiences prior with other sources that ended up not helping me at all with my goals to be a turntablist.

I emailed through the online form just to see what they might be able to do for me as I am already an established working DJ who wants to just focus on one thing.

This is where it gets real good. I started communicating with Sam, who was very helpful and courteous and actual read through my email and took great care in recommending some options. It became clear this place could care less about just “taking your money”. Which got me even more excited.

Sam told me the foundations class would not accomplish what I was looking for and said a private lesson or maybe the master class would be more suitable. I was happy to hear there were options.

The master class was going to be with Babu of the yes the Beat Junkies. I said YES I want to do that. Then came the very important pivotal moment in the conversation. I had to come and do free evaluation to see if I could even get in.

Read that again, FREE evaluation to, MAKE SURE IM NOT WASTING MY MONEY OR THEIR TIME. At this point I knew I didn’t want to go anywhere else. Sam could have responded with sure I’ll sign you up and you can pay over the phone. But no this was legit. They weren’t just out for money they want to make sure whatever you getting into is a good fit for both entities.

They had me come and test. I was nervous because I already knew I wasn’t up to speed but I wasn’t upset I was glad they wanted to make sure I was good to go. I was greeted by C-LOS and he made me feel very comfortable in a very nerve racking situation, here I am about to demonstrate my sub par skills in front of these legends and masters.

He ran me through the exercise and it was clear to me I didn’t do well. But not because he said anything negative, I just knew but he was super nice about it and then proceeded to let me know why it wouldn’t be a good idea to take the masters class and that a private lesson would be better and I could take it with Babu, one on one. It’s like ok win win here no problem.

I was more than happy to sign up and we scheduled for the next week. Now comes a whole new phase of nervousness as I had several days to wonder how this would go down.

But then the time comes, I came with all my questions written down about not knowing what to expect. Let me tell you something here... Babu never once made me feel nervous or intimidated or anything like that. He was so chill, understanding and helpful I can’t tell you enough that my session exceeded my expectations of what I would learn and what would take place. We talked about my goals and background and then got right to it. There was not a minute wasted at all. Babu has me working the tables and learning things and answering questions that gave me a much clearer perspective. He had me record some stuff so I could had take aways to practice until the next session. He was very encouraging humble and helpful. He was also very kind and took time to sign a couple things for me after the session.

I just want to thank Beat Junkies IOS for making me feel so welcome and making this whole process so great. I’m definitely coming back for open tables and more lessons, meanwhile I’ll be over here in the lab working on those chirps ;).
