Wonderful Marin County community college. Beautiful campus. New high tech buildings replace old collegiate architecture of yesteryear, but younger students are not nostalgic for what once WAS. Robin Williams was a student here. Decades of wonderful teachers have taught here. Classes and programs for a wide variety of learners. Can be an economical feeder school into University degree programs. ESL, Disabled, and certificate programs also. Senior "Emeritus" classes.

I have been taking classes in the COM Music department for a number of years now. I can't begin to tell you how much this experience has enriched my life. There seems to be two broadly general categories of students in the Music department: younger folks who are getting their two-year requirements in order to get on to a four-year school, and older folks who are coming back to, or exploring music at a later chapter in life. I am in the second category by many years. My cohorts come from as diverse a background and experience as you could ask for. But the cool thing is that we're all reaching in the same general direction. We study together, perform together, and figure it out together. The faculty and staff are all uniquely and collectively dedicated in supporting and guiding us along the way. These fine teachers - and gifted musicians in their own right - are there to show us what is possible, what to aspire to, and how realize our goals as students of music. They have been there throughout to support the goals of scholastic achievement and creative expression. I have sung in the choir, performed art songs, played the piano, and put my head through five semesters of music theory. I am proud to be a small part of this wonderful community. The COM Music department is a bright and often hidden gem of a community resource. If you want to explore your curiosity and passion for music, this is a great place to be.

We are so fortunate to have such great musical talent at the College of Marin. The faculty concerts are outstanding. I regret that I didn't begin playing in the orchestra until last year. I recommend it highly to anyone that enjoys playing classical music.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to study music at the College of Marin Kentfield Campus. When I entered school I could not read any music. I had learned everything by ear. Now, after Music Fundamentals, Ear Training I-IV, Music Theory and Piano, I can read music! This is because of the excellent instruction I received as a College of Marin music student. My teachers were so encouraging and helpful. I also made great friends and was able to perform in the orchestra for the first time and sing original and classical music. I cannot more highly recommend the College of Marin Music program. The teachers held all of their students to very high standards and then gave us the tools and practice in order to achieve our potential. If you are in any way thinking about deepening your love and knowledge of music, I urge you to try at least one class and you will be grateful you did.

I am an adult student. I have taken several piano classes and I've been very impressed with the music department. Music Fundamentals with Jim Stopher was a great class and helped me leverage my understanding of music tremendously.

The COM Symphony Orchestra under Jim Stopher has been a highlight of my entire creative life, which includes recent resumption of cello playing after a 50 year hiatus. Jim Stopher makes certain all players and sections understand and know their role and parts well, and are excited by their contributions to the whole. Every performance has been amazing, and audience appreciation is high! I would never think of missing a rehearsal, and he makes every rehearsal exciting. When music seems to fast or difficult to execute, he creates drills that build skill and momentum. What's more is that he presents music that seems out of reach for a community orchestra, and proves over and again why and how such notions can be dispelled. Dr. Stopher is a Marin County gem, and a superb composer, pianist, conductor, and music director. And more, he is patient, kind and has a great sense of humor. Lucky us.
