My children attended a local private school for two years where they were learning Mandarin. When we moved to public school they wanted to continue learning Chinese and we were fortunate to find a welcoming community at Contra Costa Chinese School. I have three children with three different teachers and I have been very pleased with the level of organization, planning, and classroom instruction for each class. Principal Chen is easy to communicate with and very responsive. We do not speak Chinese at home but are still able to complete the homework and make progress in speaking, writing, and reading. We are well into our second year at this school and have an appreciation for the rich culture and language. I highly recommend this school for Chinese and non-Chinese speaking families looking to enrich their language and cultural experiences.

The administrative staff led by Principal Chen and the teachers have done a great job in offering a wonderful place for children, teenagers, and even adults to learn Chinese language and culture in the Contra Costa county area. I have fond memories of the many fun cultural activities my child participated in at the school throughout the years. I really appreciate the hard work and dedication of Principal Chen and his staff.

Wonderful experience having my child learn Mandarin, and learning some myself in the process. School is well-run and teachers are patient and persistent; a must at a time when many such as my child and I must avail ourselves of distance learning option. We have no native speaker at home but nonetheless find the assignments achievable. Materials are first-rate and mostly assembled by the school. Teachers do all they can to keep students engaged. Could not recommend more highly.

My kids (two) have been attending this Chinese school for more than four years. Although my wife and I do speak Chinese at home, it is really hard to keep my kids interested in learning Chinese because they spend most of the time in school speaking English (and sometimes Spanish!) with their classmates (they also tend to speak English to each other when we are not in watch). Going to this Chinese school every Saturday to attend the language (2 hours) and enrichment (1 hour) programs really helps keep them focused on polishing their Chinese speaking and writing skills.

The teachers in this school are very dedicated in teaching and bringing out students' interest in learning Chinese. The Chinese school also has activities related to Chinese cultures - interested viewers can visit their website and check out the calendar.

We have a been a part of this chinese school for three years. The teachers/staff are extremely dedicated. My kids enjoy learning mandarin through songs, field trips, games, activities, as well as participating in the many cultural events that the school offers. We are able to balance our sports team schedules with chinese school (K, 2nd grade) because the teachers/staff have been very accommodating.

The school has been incredible in helping me instill my Chinese heritage to my children. We live in American Canyon (South Napa County), where there is not a large Chinese population and although my husband is Chinese, he doesn't speak any Chinese. This is one of the closest Chinese schools to us and offers Mandarin Chinese and cultural activities (both as year-long enrichment classes and festival-related activities) for kids on Saturdays.

The teachers are fantastic and really engage the kids in learning and using Mandarin Chinese. My 8 year old started 4 years ago as a kindergartener and he is currently in Chinese 3rd grade. He loves that he knows the language of his heritage and has been able to speak to relatives from abroad. My 5 year old preschooler saw that his brother likes the school and last year asked to go as well. Originally, we thought that he was too young for the kindergarten class but the school was very accommodating in allowing him to attend. And more importantly, his Chinese kindergarten teacher (Tsai Lao Shi) is so engaging that he is focused and participating the ENTIRE time in class EVERY Saturday! For anyone who has spent time with preschoolers, you know how difficult it is to keep preschoolers on task for long periods of time, let alone repeatedly. My preschooler always tells us that Saturday Chinese school is his favorite class!

Contra Costa Chinese School is a non-profit and volunteer- run educational institution. Along with language instruction, the teachers and parent volunteers are dedicated to immerse students in Chinese culture. My four children attended CCCS several years ago. It set the groundwork to enable them to continue studying the language in their high school and college years.

The teachers were nice, ( especially the one I had for third grade that many years ago ), but other than that my experience was awful. Classes were extremely boring, and I wasted two hours a week staring at the clock. Classes need to be way more interactive instead of teachers talking at the students for hours straight.
