Heroes Martial Arts Academy is an excellent gym for learning BJJ and Civilian Tactical defense.

The instructors are patient and skilled at communicating the techniques, and the community is very supportive.

Personally, finding this place has been the best thing I have ever done for my mental health. I was welcomed from the day I walked in & it has became such a healthy obsession (jiu jitsu) that I wouldn’t know what to do without this place. Coach Robbie & coach Bowlin are the best & professor Mize is the goat. 10/10 across the board!

We took a private self defense class and it was great! The instructor (Chris) was very knowledgeable and helpful. He entertained different scenarios and situations and showed my college aged daughters how to escape different holds. He gave them ample time to practice the maneuver before moving on to a new skill. I would definitely recommend Heroes Martial Arts Academy!

Chris Mize and his team are not only phenomenal instructors, they are also phenomenal people. This is the only gym I have ever been to where I felt like part of the family from day one. There is no awkward standing around and waiting for someone to speak with you. From the minute you walk in, everyone is extremely welcoming and polite. I highly recommend Chris and his team to anyone looking for martial arts training in and around the Birmingham, Alabama area.

If anyone is looking to start up Brazilian Jui-Jitsu, this is the right place to go. Coach Chris also has a location in Vestavia Hills which is where I go the most. Chris is an amazing coach. He is very passionate in what he does and you can tell he loves teaching others. I joined the class to teach me skills for when I join the police force. Chris has a great team also and they are definitely like a family. 🙂 If I was staying in the state, I would be a lifer in his class.

I have attended multiple schools in the Birmingham, Alabama area. Heroes by far is the best. The training is great because of the multiple instructors that are all legitimate fighters. They also offer more than just BJJ, such as Defense Lab(a fighting technique). Because of this, all techniques are useful both in the street and on the mat. I am currently not training but plan to pick it back up in the near future. When I do, it will be with Chris and Todd at Heroes. Anyone can contact me with any questions related to this gym.

Excellent place to train. Very welcoming atmosphere and the instructors are all very down to earth, highly skilled teachers. If you’re looking for a gym where everyone is a yolked boot camp instructor with anger issues, then this is NOT the place for you. If you’re looking for a group of welcoming, unassuming, NORMAL people from all walks of life that can kill you in five seconds, then welcome home.
