2021.04.10 UPDATE: COVID has impacted this community. The lease was not renewed by building management. ICD continues to meet online. Visit the website for details. A new location will be forthcoming from what I understand.

Spring of 2020: This meditation center offers a place of spiritual refuge and rejuvenation in central Palm Springs. Teacher lead mediations twice weekly, peer meditation weekly, and monthly workshops or retreats. This is a kind and loving place; all who come in peace are welcome. Note: it is on the second floor, but there is an elevator. Be prepared to remove your shoes. The space is heated in winter and cooled in summer. There is a public address system so all can hear. Donation based.

I'm so grateful for the compassionate teachers and community members at the Insight Community of the Desert. I feel a genuine sense of love and understanding during the online meditations and dharma talks I've attended. When I first joined, I attended an in-person event with Larry Yang that was really inspiring. I find everyone to be welcoming, inclusive, and kind hearted.

Initially it felt like a safe place but as time passed a hierarchy was established and the teachers literally and figuratively elevated themselves above the rest of us. Ian, initially friendly, began to place himself above the members and clearly had favorites. I went for the benefit of the meditation and some of the teachings. It's a great idea, hope it finds its way back to Buddhism.

BUILD BRIDGES- NOT SEGREGATED WALLS

Ian has been one of the most caring people I've ever met. But sometimes people are wrong, and commit wrongs to others in the name of goodness.
Ian is leading and supporting a seminar. It is a whites-only course. To purge the white race of their racism, they tell us.

Institutional segregation of the races is always wrong. It is demeaning to the whites in whose name it is promoted, it is always demeaning to the
others", in this case non-whites.
Ian tells us, we whites, we need protection from non-whites while purging our racism. These leaders will always tell us they have NEW information. Just follow the new "master leader" and he will help you to feel better about yourself .
Oh...and.... it leaves the "others", the other non-whites, to feel threatened and vulnerable.

This is not the only seminar out there fighting institutional racism. This white-race-only seminar was the seminar chosen from many. Its not like it chose him. No, he chose it.

I trusted his words that he had values of protection of every living thing. I had no evidence to disbelieve his statement. However, racism is a sly master. It hides from all people. Sometimes its : this won't hurt anyone, we don't have any people of color/latinx in our Mindful Meditation group. That thought leaves out white people raised within black families. Or partners/ spouses which have interracial marriages. Or kind people.

How much more nourishing this could have been to build trust and communication, recognition of common concerns, and a reluctance yet willingness to work together. BUILD BRIDGES - NOT SEGREGATED WALLS.

Please stay awake - racism can be a tool of a kind spoken man. And it can hurt you and your family beyond despair.

Ignorance or arrogance, I don't know him well enough to choose.

Non-Whites: Just stay awake.
Whites and non-Whites - There are many places in the Coachella Valley where there are good groups of fine people.
