I just wanted to share my experience with Pop Warner and having a kiddo with disabilities on the team. My son is 8 and has been in numerous sports up to this point and our football team - KPPW Saints - is the first I’ve ever experienced to not just accommodate but fully embrace him being Autistic. I was talking to our last year’s coach about my son and the way he was describing working with my kiddo was so inspiring and heartwarming. He mentioned how working with him taught him to be mindful of how literal his words can be taken, and how to navigate communicating with my son how HE will understand individually, instead of expecting my son to just figure it out as part of a team. I was on the fence because I know we are going to have to do some occupational therapy for helmets again, but after hearing how excited the coach was for my son to play again and how passionate he was about how my son’s thought process works just really made me realize how loved and appreciated my son is by others - including the coaches at KPPW. Truly made me tear up thinking that other adults existed that went out of their way to make my son have similar opportunities as others. This year we are going all in and I’m also volunteering because one thing I can get behind wholeheartedly is a youth organization that cares just as much about the child as they do the scores.
