Went there with my dad who worked in a similar factory, so I'm clearly biased.

We loved the tour. It had huge amount of details, working tools and set up. It really showed how it was. In many ways, time had stopped there and it's great for a realistic place like this.

The receptionist and the tour guides were fanatics, hands-on dedicated people who never the stories and techniques used. They were very welcoming and great story tellers.

The town is nice, too, and has a lot of food options nearby.

This place is an amazing slice of history! Took our kids this past weekend and it was very educational. Tons of stuff to look at! I really liked that they used multiple people to give the tours so you get some time to wander and explore everything without feeling rushed, best of both worlds.
Parking is a bit fun, but it wasn't very busy so it wasn't bad.

Super interesting and an amazing place to learn how things got built and done back in the day. Incredible group of folks working machines to help you understand what it took to build and operate machinery! Thanks for an outstanding tour!

This is the most interesting and amazing historical tour I have been on! I was absolutely enthralled by the amazing technology that they developed in the late 1800's. Anyone remotely interested in history or metal works or big cool equipment should take this tour.

Impressive! If you don't take the tour, walk around and look at all the amazing last water-powered foundry facility. Don't miss the Behemoth lathe!

Knight Foundry was established in 1873 to supply heavy equipment and repair facilities to the gold mines and timber industry of the Mother Lode. Samuel N. Knight developed a high speed, cast iron water wheel which was a forerunner of the Pelton Wheel design. Knight Wheels were used in some of the first hydroelectric plants in California, Utah, and Oregon.

This site is the last water powered foundry and machine shop in California. A 42-inch Knight Wheel drives the main line shaft, with smaller water motors powering other machines.

Not for everybody. If, however, you're interested in learning how stuff that will rust away first started out as molten iron poured into sand cast molds using wooden templates to produce rough castings that are then precision machined into a finished product, then you will be fascinated. Back in the day, this boomtown place was a total manufacturing center. All without the aid of electric power, air conditioning, internal combustion engines, or CAD/CAM software. Water power, sweat, pencil, paper, ruler, and horse drawn wagons. Historic.
