I have been a member of Or Hamidbar since its inception in early 2019. I was already familiar with Rabbi David Lazar and always found him to be very scholarly, very knowledgeable, an excellent teacher, and a strong advocate for basic Jewish values including social justice issues. He literally lives the values as taught by the Hebrew prophets and interpreted by the Talmudic rabbis.

My experience with Or Hamidbar has been one of learning, and of participating in a loving, non-judgmental, and affirming community. Since becoming consistently active in Jewish affairs some 15-16 years ago, Or Hamidbar is the finest experience I have had, bar none. I look forward to continued participation in this wonderful and intellectually stimulating community for years to come.

This has been one of the more exciting challenges to me in recent years. Little did I know that Rabbi David Lazar would be the provider of a spiritual renaissance in my life. He is one of the most educated individuals, not just in contemporary Jewish life, but with decades of historical and comprehensive study that he shares in classes and Torah study groups. All members of Or Hamidbar and Rabbi David Lazar welcome everyone who wants to explore and develop their spirituality from a Jewish perspective. I personally value him as a deep scholarly resource willing to—indeed, encouraging us to—view Torah and its implications from multiple points of view simultaneously (Keats’ definition of genius) without putting a specific denomination stamp on our work together. OH is anything but mushy, everything-is-everything pseudo spiritualism, or I wouldn’t go anywhere near it. And Rabbi Lazar and his wife Sascha Lazar are extraordinarily kind, gentle people, besides being smart and funny. We are beyond lucky to have them here with us in Palm Springs.

If you are looking for Shabbat services with an incredibly spiritual and educated Rabbi, where the people who attend are warm, welcoming, inclusive and enthusiastic, then I'd love to recommend Or Hamidbar. Rabbi David Lazar leads AND teaches. Or Hamidbar offers not only Shabbat services but a variety of Torah studies, lectures, holiday programs (such as wine-tasting for Purim!) and Torah Treks in the beautiful Coachella Valley & Joshua Tree National Park! Come be a part of something incredible.
