As an educator myself, I know how important it is for my child to have teachers that are dedicated, experienced, knowledgeable, and caring. In the 3 years my daughter has attended TEA, the teachers have been above and beyond those qualities. They are the best teachers I have seen teach, and I have worked with teachers in my profession for almost 20 years. The school itself has a strong administration that stays on top of educational research and health practices, and they have maintained stellar education along with safety measures that keep the staff and students as healthy as possible. I highly recommend this school as a place for your child to grow academically and as a person.

My kids have been at TEA for 8 years. They love going to school everyday! How many middle schoolers you know LOVE to go to school? Our kids feel loved by the faculty and staff, they learn by doing real things (not made up busy work), the faculty has outside experts come into the classroom or the class goes to visit them, field studies are part of the curriculum (not an excuse to get off campus), and then there are the adventures. Kids start off close to home in elementary school studying things like stream ecology, but by the senior year of high school they are designing their own international travel experiences (logistics and learning targets included). If your kid graduates from TEA, they will not have taken 18 AP courses, but they will be ready for whatever the world has to throw at them.

My two kids have attended TEA for the last ten years. Where to begin... TEA has been the best for both my kids socially, emotionally and academically. They are better critical thinkers and investigators, more resilient, confident, and empathetic human beings because of the education at TEA. They dive deep into real world problems, regularly interact with experts, are encouraged to take on hard projects where "failure" is part of the process, make time to reflect and self assess, are taught to be contributors, and are known and cared for by their teachers. I wouldn't want any other education for my kids.

My son was born in Truckee, and we joined this school in 2nd grade. I had been watching TEA develop and was very intrigued by the new campus and the momentum it was carrying. 2 years later, and a pandemic, my son still LOVES to go to school every morning and dreams of being a high schooler at TEA going on big learning adventures! What more can you ask for? He is thoughtful, inquisitive, adventurous, and feels like the teachers at TEA are like an extended family.

Full transparency on this review - I am both a parent and an administrator at TEA. I felt compelled to leave this review after reading through some of the others that were left. Additionally our daughter came home STOKED yesterday after spending the day cross country skiing to Chickadee Ridge on Mt. Rose Highway to learn about trees and the chickadees. She came home so full of passion and excitement to share what she learned about and was proud of the hard work they did to ski through bad weather and icy snow to get to this magical spot where the birds eat out of your hands (or off of your hat). Clearly this school is not for everyone and that is OK. This is not the experience most of us had in elementary/middle/high school. This is way more hands on. Way more student driven. Students are intentionally pushed physically, emotionally and intellectually to help them grow. This style of education is not the norm, but the collective group of students, parents, faculty and staff are looking to change that. And in these crazy times, we've appreciated the intentional focus on developing soft skills like adaptability, perseverance and resilience. This is whole child development. So if you're only concerned about academic rigor, this isn't the right fit for you. But if you're looking to grow a love of learning and self confidence, I encourage you to learn more.

We moved from San Francisco specifically to provide our daughters with opportunity to attend Tahoe Expedition Academy. Having worked in Bay Area schools as a mental health clinician for 15+ years, I have been increasingly worried about our nationwide youth mental health crisis. Students may be churning out excellent report cards but they are suffering tremendously with mental health issues. There is a way to raise healthy, resilient, happy youth that enjoy the journey of education vs focusing on a future goal that may not reap expected benefits. Research and experience highlight the need to reimagine education, as TEA has done. TEA's administration, faculty and staff worked tirelessly to accommodate families' differing needs during COVID. TEA's ability to adapt quickly allowed them to focus on social/mental wellbeing while continuing to provide quality education. This year was filled with new achievements in mountain biking, skiing, cross country, snow shoeing, outdoor survival skills, and more. Braving these challenges fostered friendships, trust in their teachers and confidence within themselves. These foundations carry over into the classroom and have given my daughters a platform from which to excel academically. We are grateful for how much our 3rd and 6th grader have thrived academically and socially during COVID. We can't wait to see what is in store for next year and beyond!

TEA makes a difference for so many kids. Our son loves going to school each day, and comes home from school so happy and fulfilled. We are so grateful to have TEA in the Tahoe-Truckee community!

Not impressed with this organization. They are more interested in their own bottom line than local businesses…..they reach out to you to do business then their first response is to ask for a “donation” in order to do business with them. They should be ashamed of themselves. Our community is small, lots of small businesses….for a private school to solicit money in order to work with them…..shameful!!!
