Reasonable prices; much better in that regard than CVS, which I stopped patronizing a long time ago. Also, the employees at this location are generally very friendly and helpful, especially a certain young woman from East Haddam--I don't know her name, but she tends to work the night shift. She assisted me in setting up the Walgreens app on my phone the other night. I was told about all these coupons and promo offers available for a rather expensive moisturizer that I was interested in buying, and that I would not have known about otherwise. She patiently explained how to set up the application, and then how to load the coupons. As a result, I ended up saving about $10, which I was quite happy about.

I went to the pharmacy to ask about wound care products. I had bandages in full view. The pharmacy tech was sitting on the counter with his back to the customers. He turned around to ask if I have a question but didn’t get off the counter. I asked about a particular product and he didn’t know. He motioned the pharmacist over who said everything they had is on the wall. I was treated like I was interrupting them. So much for customer service. By the way, they didn’t have squat.

Just the worst pharmacist I’ve ever experienced. Shorted my meds multiple times. Got to a point where I would have to count them at the register. Would just randomly cancel prescriptions called in by my doctor. Never took accountability or apologized. Do yourself a favor if u live in the area switch to Nutmeg. Great staff that seem like they care. Someone with chronic anxiety disorder Walgreens was causing so much anxiety every month that I just couldn’t take it anymore. They would tell me a prescription was too early to refill and I would have to tell them the date and to please check the computer again and they would say “it’s your lucky day, it went through.” No it wasn’t my lucky day. It was just the right day to fill them. Again no accountability. Essex Walgreens was always very nice they just weren’t opened on the weekends.

We got a prescription for my son here last Thursday when he had strep throat. The paper printed instructions were completely different than the instructions underneath the peel-off label on the bottle—so we didn’t realize we had to refrigerate the medication. The pharmacist never mentioned this when my husband picked up the prescription.

When I called to tell them what happened they told me to call my son’s doctor (it was Saturday so that was not possible). Then the woman we spoke with made a point to tell us “Well. MOST liquid medicines like this have to be refrigerated.” I am not a pharmacist, this is my first child. And he has never been prescribed this medication before. I’m shocked this person was disrespectful and rude enough to insinuate it was our job to have this knowledge….and to blame us for their serious error. Meanwhile, my 6 year old was upstairs with an infection that may not have been properly treated for 48 hours.

This pharmacy is negligent, inconsistent, and most of all rude. I will be switching as soon as possible for my family’s safety.

Walgreens in Deep River has greatly improved in the last few years. The general store part of it is well-stocked and well-organized with very friendly staff. The pharmacy is often out of my medication or my insurance doesn’t want to approve it so I know to reorder early. The staff has been very good about working with my insurance and resubmitting to get approval and make sure I can have my medication.
My criticism is that their grounds and garden area seem pretty much an afterthought. I would like them to spend a bit of money on making their exterior prettier so it looks well-cared for and. Or like a 7-11 parking lot.

I live in Deep River. This Walgreens provided me with so many terrible experiences, I decided to transfer my prescriptions to another retailer, and take a ten minute trip to Saybrook in order to get my meds.

Problems with this Walgreens:

A. Because it is in a small town full of elderly people, some of the customers there are actually shopping for groceries as well as normal drugstore goods. This creates a massive line, and the workers are not very responsive to this fact. I've stood in a queue there for over a half hour before being served, and the second register was never opened.

B. I've actually had employees refuse me service because I don't have or want a Walgreens card. I've been told that I cannot use a credit card if I do not have a Walgreens card, and that this is company policy. I know that's not the case, because on other occasions, I've been allowed to use a card here.....meaning the employees here will lie to you in order to convince you to spend 15 minutes registering for a card at a place that is good for meds, and not much else.

C. Their credit card system is antiquated, or their router is bad, because it takes a very long time for the transaction to be approved. Half of the time, it has an error, and the card info must be entered again. Add to that, the employees mostly seem not to understand the system or cash registers whatsoever.

D. My doctor calls in prescriptions here, and it often takes them until the next day to fill them. Once, I had a prescription sent two weeks ahead of time, and when I went to pick it up, they told me it would take 5 hours or so. This is unacceptable.

TL;DR: this place will waste your time. The employees will lie to you, attempt to take advantage of you, and is unable to fill prescriptions in any sort of reasonable time frame. Don't go here.

I have never used their pharmacy which people seem to complain about but this is the best general store in the area (Chester, Deep River, Essex) it is clean, modern, staff is friendly. I happily come here when I need something small or quick.
