I’ve been a member at the Greenwich Y, on and off, since the 1980’s. I use to go when I was a kid back in school and I loved the place. The facility has been upgraded so it certainly looks better than years ago. But don’t judge a book by its cover. The place has become a cardio focused gym. Very little weights or weight equipment so there is often a long line to use it.

The thing I dislike the most are the poor attitudes of some of the staff and trainers. Wow, they are not nice and down right nasty. I suppose this is a reflection of their management.

For over $120 per month there are better gyms. This isn’t the Y I remember from my youth. If you really like Y’s, I recommend the one in Darien. Great facility with lots of weights and cardio.

It really makes my day every day I go to the YMCA of Greenwich. The olympic sized pool is amazing. Every member of the staff is friendly and helpful. I only visit when I am visiting from out of state but I've been especially impressed by one of the trainers in the gym, whose name is Lamont. He always has such a positive demeanor. I overhear him coaching and encouraging others and his positive spirit is contagious...I feel encouraged too, just overhearing him. Hats off to everyone at the YMCA of Greenwich, including their very generous benefactors and donors.

I am a swimmer and can comment only my experience swimming as a guest. I visit Ys all over the country and this was the best pool I've ever been in as well as the first true Olympic sized pool.

The water is impeccably clean and the lanes are wide. In long course format, they have 8 lanes that can be very comfortably split (not all may be open depending on the time). I'm an early morning swimmer and the pool had people in all lanes but room for splits. Nice temperature for active swimmers.

The locker room upstairs was well maintained in general with ample dehumidification. They do supply body wash, shampoo and conditioner in the showers. Steam shower and sauna are available. It's not a huge locker room but it's also not the only one.

There is a historic wood paneled lounge that is really lovely.

Six visits as a guest before you start paying half price. The $10/day (half the normal day rate of $20 for an adult) would be well worth it to jump into such a great pool.

I have called several times and have gone to request financial help and since I arrived at the counter and without any reason, without losing my documents or me proving my income, they denied me the help. They said they would call me, they never did. They are racists. I don't like how they treated me. I treated them with respect but I didn't feel that they cared.

I've got two young daughters in swimming lessons here at the moment. Due to covid, numbers are down to two per class. This obviously means almost 1:1 coaching, which is great for their swimming development and 30minutes quickly goes by. All staff are very nice and welcoming. The place is clean and well maintained. There is a good small pool for kids development, as well as an impressive Olympic sized pool.
There is a clean family changing room, just with the one shower room but with three private changing rooms as well. And there are obviously other changing facilities for over 18s.
Definitely a good option for sports, children or adults.

My son loves to play basketball there, but the system for borrowing a basketball may need improvement. I think the cost of a student membership is on the steep side and often think it's better for my son to just pay per visit as opposed to the monthly unless he has the time to go more than 5 times a month. All in all, it's a great place for teens to go.

In follow up to my review below, the Greenwich YMCA agreed to extend me "a one-time courtesy" of refunding my money. They said they were sorry they could not meet my needs, but were more concerned with giving their “multiple championship winning teams” the opportunity to “practice throughout the day and into the evening.” They also acknowledged their schedules were inaccurate, but said the only information they deem valuable to their adult members is when lap lanes will be available for them.

Apparently, their staff is not required to correctly answer direct questions like “Will a swim team be monopolizing most of the lanes?” And, members shouldn’t expect to know if 1 lane or 10 lanes will be available to them – they are lucky to be allowed to swim at all since their needs are not as important as the needs of young champions.

What an arrogant, disgraceful organization!

FIRST REVIEW
Before purchasing membership, the YMCA staff assured me the pool schedule they published online was accurate and several lap lanes would be available most nights. When I inquired if swim teams would be practicing in the evenings, I was told they would not. I discovered the schedule was inaccurate and a swim team monopolizes the pool nearly every evening, making it difficult and unpleasant to swim laps. I requested membership cancellation and refund, but received no response and was forced to ask my credit card company to dispute the charge.

I drove nearly an hour in heavy rush hour traffic looking forward to a relaxing swim, and received stress and aggravation instead. I am disgusted with the misrepresentation, inconsideration, and disrespect this organization has demonstrated. I recommend that any adult looking to swim laps in the evenings, look elsewhere.
